About the Role
We’re working with a respected nonprofit provider of integrated behavioral health and community-based care services across New York. They are seeking a mission-driven Internal Auditor who combines strategic thinking with a process improvement mindset.
This is a high-impact role working alongside senior leadership, including the General Counsel and CEO, to evaluate and strengthen internal systems. You’ll play a key role in shaping operational effectiveness, assessing risk management and governance, and delivering actionable insights that improve outcomes for both the organization and the communities it serves.
Key Responsibilities
Audit Planning & Strategy
Conduct preliminary research to understand core business functions and operational priorities
Design customized audit strategies tailored to organizational goals and risks
Designing Audit Work Programs
Within the first month, build a detailed audit program specific to the engagement focus
Clearly define audit steps and objectives
Operational Fieldwork
Analyze current practices and assess management controls
Identify inefficiencies, risk areas, and opportunities for improvement
Root Cause & Process Analysis
Go beyond surface-level observations to uncover underlying issues
Provide well-supported recommendations to address gaps in workflows or financial performance
Reporting & Executive Presentations
Deliver clear, concise reports to the General Counsel, CEO, and Board Committees
Recommend immediate corrective actions when warranted
Cross-functional Collaboration
Participate in special projects related to systems improvements and organizational growth
Required Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Master’s degree in Finance, Business, or Public Administration
Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in auditing, with exposure to operational or administrative functions
Strong knowledge of audit processes in healthcare or nonprofit environments
Familiarity with Medicaid, Medicare, NYS Public Health Law (Article 28), and NYS Mental Hygiene Laws (Articles 31 and 32) is highly preferred
Experience with healthcare information systems and process benchmarking
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Strong problem-solving ability and an eye for detail
Additional Requirements
Willingness to travel to program sites within the service area (up to 100%)
Ability to work flexible hours as needed during peak audit periods or critical projects
